Prepare Spoilboard for FlatCUT CNC Oscillating Blade Cutters (Same Apply to CNC Routers)
This is one awesome machine! It’s not just any CNC router—it’s a beast with an oscillating blade cutter, a routing spindle, and a slick CCD camera system. Before we start slicing through materials like a hot knife through butter, we’ve got to nail the wasteboard setup. Trust me, it’s the foundation for all the awesome cuts you’ll be making.
Here’s a friendly guide to get that wasteboard ready to roll.
Why the Wasteboard Is a Big Deal
The wasteboard is your machine’s unsung hero. It’s a sacrificial surface that does two key things:
Protects the table: Keeps your actual machine bed safe from cuts and dings.
Ensures precision: Gives you a flat, smooth surface for consistent, high-quality cuts.
Get this right, and you’re setting yourself up for success from the get-go.
Getting to Know Your Table Zones
The machine’s bed is split into zones or quadrants, which is super handy. These let you control vacuum pressure where you need it most, saving energy and keeping your materials locked down tight. To make this work, we need to seal each zone with silicone to prevent air leaks that could weaken the vacuum’s grip.
Pro tip: Don’t sweat the silicone colour. We used grey at first, then switched to black. Just pick whatever makes it easy to see where you’ve applied it.
Cutting and Setting Up the Wasteboard
This machine can handle everything from stiff boards to floppy fabrics, so we want to maximise the cutting area—especially for those big 2.5-meter-wide fabric rolls. Here’s how we set it up using two superwood sheets:
Lay down the first sheet, making sure it fits nice and snug.
Run a bead of silicone along the edge where the sheets meet.
Place the second sheet down to create one seamless surface across the table.
After that, it’s time for a quick cleanup. Use your fingers to smooth out the silicone edges—nothing fancy, but it makes a difference for a clean, pro setup.
The Finishing Touch: Carpet Layer
Once the wasteboard is secure, top it off with a carpet layer. This boosts grip, cuts down on wear, and gets your machine ready to tackle all sorts of materials with clean, precise cuts.
And boom—you’re ready to start cutting!
What’s Next?
With the wasteboard set, the real fun begins. This machine can slice through just about anything you throw at it, and I’m pumped to put it through its paces. If you’re into fabrication, signage, textiles, or just making cool stuff, you’re gonna love what this thing can do.
